The Colon

1. It's a mark of introduction that allows the writer to consolidate information that would normally take more than one sentence to state.
2. Use the colon at the end of a sentence to do the following: introduce a list, introduce a long quotation, or introduce an explanation.

This is good; it sounds a lot like many texts. There's another aspect to this, though. There must be a complete statement before the colon, and the object of the sentence cannot be after the colon.

Another point I find useful is that the colon indicates a restatement of a sort. In other words, if it's a list, it itemizes what comes before; if it's a statement, it restates what comes before; if it's a quote, it demonstrates what comes before.
