I think I am going to write my research paper on the same subject that I am debating. I am debating gun controll. I spoke with the professor about my thesis. I was having a hard time thinking of one. The subject of gun control is so large where do you begin. He helped me narrow it down to whether or not the federal government should be in control. I think this is a more managable subject, even thought you could easily write a book on it. Now I have to start my outline. I am not real sure what I am going to base it on. I guess I will have to start my research so that I will know how to organize my outline.

That's a common circumstance. It's part of what makes research projects devilishly difficult.

Get the subject narrowed as much as you can.

Then, start with general readings. Use Wikipedia, even if you're not going to cite it. Your professors won't accept it, so you'd might as well get used to that now. But it's a good place to begin, just to see what the general accepted wisdom about a certain topic is.

Usually, after some initial reading, one can alter the thesis statement in a way that focuses more specifically on what one wants to say, thereby narrowing the topic.

I would have to say I am in the same boat, but what I am having trouble with is trying to sound original and make this topic my own. Mostly all sides have been touched on and I don’t want to sound like I’m just regurgitating very thing.

I had planned to write my research paper on the debate topic, but now I am reconsidering writing it on another topic. I am currently considering a few topics that are very interesting to me, and I am struggling on deciding because of the specifics that are involved in each of the topics.
